Brazilian presidential candidate Dilma Rousseff has pledged her support to the Rio 2016 Olympics and outlined plans to transform the country into a sporting powerhouse.
Rio 2016 is currently welcoming Presidential candidates to be briefed on Olympic plans as Brazil prepares for a general election in October.
Rousseff, who is standing for current President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s Workers’ Party, is the third candidate to come out in support of the event after the Green Party’s Marina Silva and the Social Democratic Party’s José Serra.
Rousseff was welcomed by Rio 2016 president Carlos Arthur Nuzman and watched a presentation on the Olympic project.
As a central figure in Rio’s successful bid for the event, Rousseff said she aims “to reinforce my commitment to turn Brazil into one of the biggest and best sports and social powers in the world”.
Nuzman added: “As a minister, Dilma Rousseff was fundamental for Rio’s victory in the 2016 Games race and, if elected, I am sure we will be working with someone aware of the importance of the Games for Brazil.”
