South Africa has announced plans to hold a cycling event to rival the Tour de France on the back of the success of the World Cup.
The country’s cycling governing body said it has scheduled the first Tour of South Africa for February and hopes it will become a major event on the international cycling calendar.
South Africa, which is also planning to bid for the 2020 Olympics, has only hosted one previous international cycling event, but it was discontinued a decade ago.
Cycling South Africa general secretary Ciska Austin said the Tour races in 2010 and 2012 were already guaranteed.
“The aim of the tour is to create a cycling culture in South Africa and to make professional cyclists around the world want to ride in South Africa,” he explained.
“This tour will be a chance to showcase our beautiful country and our great elite riders. What makes cycling unique is that the spectators actually get to see the beautiful South African scenery.”
