The scandal-hit 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi could harm India’s chances of hosting a future Olympics.
The Indian Government was hoping a successful Games in October would kick-start a bid for the 2020 Olympics.
But the build up has been mired by allegations of corruption that have led to the resignation or suspension of three senior members of the organising committee (OC).
The Daily Telegraph quotes a source as saying the situation “has destroyed any proposed Olympic bid before one has even been launched”.
However, chairman of the OC Suresh Kalmadi is refusing to stand down over the crisis.
"The Commonwealth Games is my baby,” said Kalmadi, a politician with the ruling Congress party and president of the Indian Olympic Association.
“I’m not quitting – there is no question of quitting. I cannot afford to do that.”
