South Africa's World Cup stadiums are “too big” for the Premier Soccer League's (PSL) Top Eight tournament, which takes place this week.
None of the 10 venues will be used for the event, which features the top eight teams from last season's Premier League.
When the Premier League itself starts on August 27, only three of the stadiums will be used – and some only sparingly.
Chief executive of the PSL Kjetil Siem said: "FNB Stadium, for example, is just too big to have teams like Pirates and Santos play there. Running the league is also a business and we have to make a fair amount of money from the gate takings. It is better when the stadiums are full.”
Reports in South Africa suggest the stadiums could become white elephants as a result of the decision.
