The National Football League’s 32 teams fell in value by a combined 2 per cent last season – the first decline since Forbes began its survey 12 years ago.
The value of 21 teams fell because of lower revenue from sources other than broadcasting due to the recession. The average franchise is now worth $1.02bn, the survey found.
The Dallas Cowboys topped the rankings for the fourth straight year – rising in value by a league- best 9 per cent to $1.81bn. At the other end of the scale, the Jacksonville Jaguars slumped 16 per cent in value to a league-low $725m.
NFL revenue rose 5.8 per cent to $8bn on higher television income, Forbes said. Income from broadcasters CBS, NBC, ESPN and Fox climbed $1.3m per team to $95.8m for each franchise, the report added.
The Washington Redskins ranked second in value at $1.55bn, followed by the New England Patriots at $1.37bn and the New York Giants at $1.18bn. All three teams’ values are unchanged from a year ago. The Houston Texans completed the top five at $1.17bn – 2 per cent higher than in last year’s survey.
The number of teams worth more than $1bn dropped to 16 from 19 a year ago as the Pittsburgh Steelers, Tennessee Titans and Kansas City Chiefs fell below that mark.
