The National Football League is aiming to expand its regular season to 18 games in 2012, commissioner Roger Goodell has revealed.
While there is “overwhelming support” to add two games to the schedule, team owners resisted a vote on the issue during a five-hour meeting in Atlanta on Wednesday (August 25), he said.
But the league is putting together a proposal about the expansion to present to the players’ union “rather quickly”, Goodell added. He claims additional games would benefit owners, players and fans by increasing revenue.
“We’re focusing more on 2012,” Goodell explained. “We want to do this the right way. We have moved this concept along and think it’s the right step to take, but we want to do this in conjunction with our partners, including the players.”
Under the plan, two of the four pre-season games for each team would be replaced with regular-season matches. The NFL switched to 16 games from 14 in 1978.
