No sign of resolution in horse racing betting row
 01/09/2010

The Government will have to be called in to arbitrate in the increasingly bitter row over how much bookmakers should pay the racing industry for the right to bet on the sport, according to leading figures from both sides.

Ralph Topping, chief executive of bookmarkers William Hill, and Simon Bazalgette, chief executive of the Jockey Club, have both cast doubt on the ability of the two sides to come to an agreement before the October 31 deadline. If the parties cannot agree, the decision will be taken by the Government, reports the Daily Telegraph.

Topping said: "At this stage, I am not confident of an agreement being reached."

Bazalgette added: "It is not looking good that any deal will be done."

The starting points for the negotiations are thought to be wildly different, with the racing industry asking for between £130m and £150m and the bookmakers only prepared to pay £62m next year.
