The 2010 Tri-Nations rugby tournament will boost the sport and leisure economy of the southern hemisphere by $175m, according to a new study.
The MasterCard report predicted a further injection of almost $40m following Argentina's addition to the competition in 2012.
Combined with the 2010 Six Nations, the report shows the value of the two largest international annual rugby tournaments surpassed $800m, giving the sport a lift before next year's World Cup in New Zealand.
The study points to a substantial economic impact for cities across the southern hemisphere from hosting Tri-Nations matches, reports Reuters.
Sydney, for example, is expected to enjoy a $28m boost from staging Australia v New Zealand this weekend, according to the study.
Johannesburg and Christchurch are also set to benefit by $19.6m and $12m respectively from hosting two Tri-Nations games.
