Clubs in Europe’s five biggest football leagues slashed their transfer spending by 29 per cent to 1.32bn euros over the summer, according to a new report.
Spending plummeted by 45 per cent in Spain’s La Liga and by 43 per cent in Ligue 1 of France, the report by Prime Time Sport said, adding that it fell by 15 per cent in the English Premier League.
Uefa president Michel Platini believes a decline in transfer spending is good news.
“It’s good they are spending less money,” he said. “If they spend more money, they would be bankrupt.”
Spending on transfers fell 32 per cent in Germany’s Bundesliga and 18 per cent in Italy’s Serie A, the report added.
