USA Track & Field (USATF) chief executive Doug Logan has admitted his future is uncertain.
Logan said that his position will be discussed when the governing body's board meets in Las Vegas this weekend.
"I think that is the sole topic," Logan told Reuters.
Logan, USATF's chief executive since July 2008, has received mixed reviews for his first two years in the role.
His hands-on style and desire for change have drawn both praise and criticism, while concerns over the need for increased financial sponsorships have also been expressed.
But nine-time Olympic champion Carl Lewis believes Logan is the right person to move the sport forward in the United States.
"He brings credibility, knowledge and expertise," Lewis said. "He understands the future and has a vision. They [USATF] were lucky he fell in their hands."
Lewis added that for too many years, USATF and its predecessors had been dysfunctional and run by "people who don't understand anything outside their own zip code”.
"The sport is not even an also-ran in America," he continued. "I can't believe they want to try and get rid of him.”
USATF president Stephanie Hightower confirmed the board would meet in executive session this weekend but would not be drawn on the agenda.
"We don't discuss personnel matters regardless of who it is," she stated.
A former Major League Soccer (MLS) commissioner, Logan conducted a review after a disappointing showing by American athletes at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
He has set a goal of 30 athletics medals for the 2012 London Games. The United States won 23 in 2008.
