Fifa warns US World Cup bid over legacy
 13/09/2010

A World Cup in America in either 2018 or 2022 would have to leave an international legacy as well as a domestic one.

That was the verdict of Fifa inspection head Harold Mayne-Nicholls following his team’s visit to the US last week.

While praising the stadiums and the infrastructure in the US, Mayne-Nicholls warned: “If you were to be awarded the event, we would also need a strong focus on international legacy, not only on a domestic one.”

US Soccer president Sunil Gulati reacted by saying that the bid committee would take all of the inspection team’s observations on board.

“In the end, it’s not only about having the infrastructure and having top-level stadiums and so on,” he added. “It’s about convincing 24 people that it’s in the best long-term interests of the sport to come to the United States.”
