UK Sport chief operating officer Liz Nicholl is thought to be the frontrunner to replace John Steele as chief executive of the organisation.
Former international netball player Nicholl is understood to be the overwhelming choice from the six candidates shortlisted to succeed Steele, who quit in June to become chief executive at the Rugby Football Union, reports Inside the Games.
Her appointment still has to be formally approved by Jeremy Hunt, the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.
Nicholl, who was beaten to the top job by Steele in 2003, was capped 22 times by Wales at netball and is a former chief executive of English Netball. She has been at UK Sport since 1999.
UK Sport refused to confirm Nicholl's appointment. A spokesman said: "The process to find a new chief executive to replace John Steele is still on-going."
