Cape Town has asked South Africa's Olympic Committee (SASCOC) if it would consider a bid from the city for the 2020 Olympic Games.
SASCOC announced recently that Cape Town had missed the July 31 deadline to declare its interest in bidding, and revealed that Durban was the country's only candidate. But Cape Town officials claim they were not made aware of any deadline.
Cape Town spokesman Pieter Cronje told the Associated Press: "The city has written to SASCOC to ask for the opportunity to consider a possible submission of a bid.”
Tubby Reddy, chief executive of SASCOC, denied suggestions that Cape Town, Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth had not been given a fair chance.
"The notion that SASCOC messed up Cape Town's Olympic bid is very far from the truth and in fact is rather an attempt from some to hide their own inefficiency,” he added.
However, Cronje continued: "We would like to consider the possibility of a bid, but it's no small exercise. But there should be enough time for the city to express interest.”
Reddy said SASCOC’s board will decide whether to reopen the bidding.
