South Africa 2010 lauded by fans
 27/09/2010

A new FIFA survey has revealed that this summer’s World Cup in South Africa was a resounding success in the eyes of football fans.

The sixth and final wave of a two-year public opinion study shows both South African residents and visiting fans felt a strong sense of unity and pride as a result of the month-long tournament.

Ninety one per cent of South Africans claim their country is now more unified, 90 per cent feel the country has more self-belief and 87 per cent feel more confident than ever in its capabilities.

Meanwhile, 99 per cent of the international fans polled view the World Cup venues positively, 94 per cent would recommend a visit to South Africa, and 83 per cent want to return to the country themselves.

“These findings highlight what we felt all along – that hosting the event in South Africa would prove to be a huge success,” FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke said.
