The French football federation refunded £3,4m to sponsors because of the untimely exit of Les Blues from the World cup earlier this year.
Several companies began reconsidering their partnership with the team after the off-pitch scandal between star Nicolas Anelka and manager Raymond Domenech, the players’ training strike and the failure to continue after the group phase of the competition in South Africa.
The governing body of the French football complied with the demand of sponsors to reimburse them for the poor performance and image damage of the team and the players themselves. After paying the compensation the Federation accounted for £1,6m loss on the year.
However, already £1,7m were saved from spared World cup bonuses for the players and the administrative stuff. They were invested in the bid for hosting the 2016 UEFA European Football Championship, which turned out successful.
French Football Federation treasurer Bernard Desumer agreed that the World cup 2010cause image, moral and financial damage. “Otherwise the financial outcome of the 2009-10 accounts would have been excellent had it not been for the serious events in South Africa”, he stated.
Several advertising campaigns, featuring French national footballers, had come to an end already during the World cup competition.
