The Governor of Salzburg Gabi Burgstaller announced that Salzburg will not be making any more bids to host the Winter Olympics.
The decision was taken after investigation of the work of Salzburg's Olympic Committee in the last four months. Her concerns are that Salzburg is not competitive and has no sufficient financial and political support to be successful like the eventual winner Sochi in Russia.
Burgstaller is firm that while she is in charge Salzburg is not going to bid for hosting Olympics. Among the reasons she points out the unclear rules of the competition. The Governor received the support of the Austrian Olympic Committee, but she distanced herself from the institution in Vienna because of its scandals for financial irregularities last year. As a result the president had to quit and the general secretary was dismissed for embezzling sponsorship funds.
Austria already has hosted Winter Olympics twice - in Innsbruck 1964 and 1976, and the Winter Paralympics in 1988.
