The President of the English bid for hosting the World Cup David Dein revealed the possible withdrawal from the competition in 2022 to concentrate on winning the approval for the tournament four years earlier.
The decision is provoked by the USA’s hint to pull out of the race for 2018 World Cup. If this happens, all nations bidding for the tournament will be from Europe. Due to the FIFA rotation principle any European bid for the event four years later will be ineligible.
David Dein said that if USA withdraws from the running to host the 2018 tournament, “consequently we will almost certainly withdraw from 2022″.
These will be the most contested bids in FIFA’s history considering their amount. The winners of the right to host the tournaments in 2018 and 2022 will be announced on 2nd December 2010. The competitors for the first one are the USA, Belgium & Netherlands, Portugal & Spain, Russia and England. Besides them the race for the next World cup includes Australia, Japan, Qatar and South Korea. England and Russia are thought to be the two favourites to win the bid for hosting the 2018 tournament, while the 2022 bidding race is expected to be more intense with USA as a favourite.
