US Olympic TV-rights fight starts
 29/09/2010

International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge indicated that negotiations for US TV rights to the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, and the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro could begin already this year.

NBC Universal already gave $2.2 billion for the Olympics in Vancouver and London. Nevertheless the unstable US economy and the problematic geographical position of Sochi are precondition for no higher stakes for the next Winter Olympics. Besides NBS, in the race for the TV deal will take part also Disney, News Corporation and a combination of Turner and CBS.

NBC Sport&Olympics; chairman Dick Ebersol will try to keep the Games at the lowest possible price after disclosing earlier that NBC Universal actually lost $250 million on this year's Vancouver Games. Anyway, NBC Universal wants to extend its Olympics rights into 2014 and 2016. But ESPN-led Disney and other firms will attempt to put an end to that streak before the year is out.
