The biggest challenge for the next president of Brazil will be the hosting of the World Cup 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016.
This week presidential elections will be held. Polls suggest Dilma Rousseff will win without even need of a runoff four weeks later.
The current head of state Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva succeeded in guaranteeing the events to take place in his country as the the 2016 Olympic Games will be the first held in South America.
The host city of Rio de Janeiro will need around $17 billion in public and private funds to stage it. 40 % of that sum will be invested in transport.
Security and urban reorganization are among the hot topics in the years preceding the two sport events. In Rio $144 million will be dedicated to battle organized crime, develop social projects, and weaken drug gangs.
The city also will be among the 12 hosting the World Cup finals. Another $7 billion will be needed to increase the capacity of the 16 airport terminals by two-thirds. The modernization and extension of road and rail links as well as the renovation of seven ports will cost $400 million.
