National Football League Players Association and National Football League met in Washington to discuss a proposal to change to an 18-game regular season. Both institutions announced that talked about longer regular season, a rookie wage scale and improvements for retired players.
League owners and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell wants to expand the regular season from 16 games to 18, and cut the preseason from four games to two. He underlined that the approval of the players is not needed for the regular season to be extended.
The players currently get 59.6 % of NFL revenues, but the owners aim at reducing it and redirect money to pay off their debts. The NFL generates nearly $8 billion in revenues annually, with about $1 billion going to operating expenses. The owners get about 40 % of the rest, but they want about $1.3 billion more before the players get their cut. Thus they want two more regular-season games to get more money out of the networks for everyone.
Some players have also stated a willingness to play more games for more money. It's possible they could agree to the extra games if the NFL backed off the 18% pay cut the NFLPA has said the league is asking players to take.
