A Russian delegation led by the former FIFA executive member Vyacheslav Koloskov arrived in Brazil with the mission to gain support for Russia’s bid to host the 2018 World Cup.
The bid team will make an effort to get the favours returned that helped Rio de Janeiro win the 2016 Olympic Games.
Russian Sports Minister and bid co-chairman Vitaly Mutko confessed that the delegation hopes to sway South America’s three FIFA ex-co members – Nicolas Leoz, Julio Grondona and Ricardo Teixiera. They are likely to vote for the joint Spain-Portugal bid. A second or third round of voting are possible and their support could be crucial if Spain-Portugal drop out.
The two votes of the Russian Olympic committee went the way of Rio at last October’s Olympics host elections. Now Russia seeks payback, which will help in the race to become host of the 2018 World Cup.
