Recent doping scandals in cycling are to affect sponsorship deals. After an abnormal doping test result for Alberto Contador during the Tour de France, runner-up in the Vuelta earlier this month Ezequiel Mosquera and his Xacobeo-Galicia team mate David Garcia both failed drugs tests during the Spanish grand tour.
Teams looking for sponsorship could struggle to secure the funds they need as the sport's image is damaged.
“I am looking for a sponsor to save my team. When I talk to interested parties, I praise the young riders' ethic and yet, but bad news keep coming. I am horribly disappointed”, said Bbox manager Jean-Rene Bernaudeau, who is trying to find a sponsor for next year.
The positive result tests of Mosquera and Garcia are likely to make their Xacobeo-Galicia to withdraw from the sport. The team has already been looking for a sponsor to replace the regional government that currently backs it, but announced earlier this month that it would not be renewing its support. Moreover, the 34-year-old Mosquera was to join the Vacansoleil team but his positive test may result in his contract being terminated even before it started.
