UK Athletics chairman Ed Warner revealed his concerns that London's bid for 2015 will fail due to lack of national and local government support in an interview for Telegraph Sport. He said that UKA has not yet received the guarantees that it requires.
The IAAF will declare the host for the 2015 event in November. London is in competition with Beijing. Host governments are required to underwrite the event to the tune of £45m, and need the city to sign a “host authority” agreement. The government and City Hall will also need to contribute up to £15m to ensure the event, but neither institution has yet provided the necessary guarantees. Warner believes that with the government support provided, London has excellent chances to bring the event in the UK capital.
“Having the World Athletics Championship three years after 2012, with some of the same stars returning, will really help activate the legacy that we have all talked so much about”, added Warner.
