Donald Tusk and Mykola Azarov assured that the stadiums for UEFA Euro 2012 championship will be completed on time. After a meeting the prime ministers of Poland and Ukraine dismissed criticism of their preparations for the finals in two years.
UEFA president Michel Platini expressed concerns in April when publicly slammed Ukraine because of delays in the construction work of the Kiev and Lviv stadium projects. Platini has since withdrawn his threat to strip Ukraine of its co-hosting role after acceleration in preparations on the two venues. In June the European governing body confirmed that Kiev would stage the final as planned.
“We are confident that the championship, which is important for Europe, will take place in four Ukrainian and four Polish cities,” Donald Tusk said.
Polish and Ukrainian leaders also approved a road map outlining the deadlines for the remaining preparations ahead.
UEFA Euro 2012 operations director Martin Kallen has already revealed that the 69,000-seat Kiev stadium could be finished by next June, while the new 35,000-capacity Lviv stadium is on target for completion in August.
UEFA remains concerned about the slow pace of progress on some of Poland and Ukraine's transport and accommodation infrastructure. Last month, an audit report found that nearly half of Poland's infrastructure preparations for Euro 2012 were behind schedule.
