The Rugby Football Union (RFU) has announced a crackdown on England players’ commercial, media and online activities during the World Cup next year.
At a meeting held at Twickenham this week, club officials and rugby agents were informed that the governing body will be implementing a range of restrictive measures at the tournament in New Zealand, reports the Daily Mail.
Players in the national squad will be banned from using Twitter, Facebook or any other social networking or messaging sites from the moment they board the plane at Heathrow in August until their return in October.
They will be prevented from posting pictures or updates during their time Down Under to avoid a repeat of recent controversies in cricket caused by online outbursts from Kevin Pietersen and Dimitri Mascarenhas.
Furthermore, none of the players will be permitted to act as newspaper columnists while they are at the World Cup.
Those present at the meeting were told in no uncertain terms that the RFU does not want players to be tied into individual commercial activity to coincide with the tournament.
