Australia's World Cup bid chief Frank Lowy has hinted that his country's withdrawal from the 2018 race could have boosted its chances of hosting the event in 2022.
"We were able to make some friends as a result of that," the Football Federation Australia chairman said.
He believes Australia's decision to pull out of the 2018 contest earlier this year to allow a European country to stage that tournament could help his nation win enough votes on December 2 to see off the challenge from rival 2022 bids Japan, Qatar, South Korea and USA.
With eight Europeans among the 24 Fifa executive committee members, Lowy remains upbeat about his country's bid chances.
"I am reasonably confident that we are going to be there," he added. "But we have to remember this is a contest.
"We can win it or lose it. In two minutes of extra time, games are won and lost on the field, and it is the same with this."
