TSE Consulting has published a revealing survey looking into trends in the relationship between international federations (IF) and cities/regions hosting their World Championships.

Almost the entire group of Olympic international summer and winter federations (31 out of 35) responded to the TSE survey.

Among the results, the survey showed that:

• 68 per cent of the Olympic IFs have seen an increase in financial contributions from host cities over the past 10 years. The same percentage (68 per cent) believe this trend will continue

• Only 45 per cent of the Olympic IFs believe it is a requirement for a city to have hosted one of their smaller events before it is allowed to host their World Championship event. The majority (71 per cent), however, think it is important for the city to have a plan in place to develop the sport after the event

• 68 per cent of the Olympic IFs feel it is important to keep a balance between the continents when selecting hosts for their World Championships

• Most Olympic IFs (61 per cent) do not feel it matters whether it is a city or a region bidding for their event. Twenty nine per cent prefer cities, saying they tend to be stronger partners that present less risk, while the remaining 10 per cent are the sports that require multiple venues for their events

The survey was conducted from February to July 2010 through face-to-face interviews and phone interviews for those federations based outside of Switzerland.
