India's main opposition party has accused the country’s Government of corruption over the Commonwealth Games.
The Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) claimed on Tuesday (October 19) that it had evidence linking ruling Congress politicians and the office of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Commonwealth Games corruption.
The BJP has threatened to stall parliament, which is due to open on November 9, unless an impartial investigation is launched.
The cost of staging the Delhi Games, which ended last week, spiralled to $6bn from an original budget of $450m and BJP chief Nitin Gadkari said: "Every time a revised budget was presented to the cabinet it was cleared. This means the Prime Minister justified [the cost escalations]. Whether he was right or wrong, that should be probed."
The October 3-14 Games were beset by corruption allegations, health and security issues and chronic mismanagement.
Local media investigations in the run-up to the Games claimed to have found financial irregularities with companies contracted to provide services and products to the event, forcing Prime Minister Singh to promise a full probe after its conclusion.
