World Snooker has announced that a new £130,000 tournament will be staged in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo next September.
The first world event to be held in South America will be called the Brazilian Masters and will involve the world's top 12 players plus four wildcards.
Six-time world champion Steve Davis is already guaranteed an invitation, with Brazilian Snooker Association chairman Marcilio Cavalcanti describing him as snooker's version of Zico or Rivelino.
World Snooker chairman Barry Hearn thinks that a full ranking event will follow in Brazil in two years' time.
"This is samba time for snooker,” he said. “Football is like a religion in Brazil. Our job is to make snooker their second religion.
"I believe this is the dawn of a new era. This is bigger than a $200,000 tournament. We are working on the globalisation of our sport and this opens up a continent for snooker.
"Breaking into South America is a huge step towards our ambition of making snooker a truly global sport."
