Rogge encourages Fifa “clean out”
 28/10/2010

International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge has advised Sepp Blatter to “clean out” Fifa following the World Cup bid corruption scandal.

Rogge has spoken to Fifa boss Blatter this week and hopes football’s governing body will become a more “transparent” organisation as a result of the allegations made by the Sunday Times newspaper.

Two executive committee members have been provisionally suspended after it was alleged that they effectively offered to sell their votes in the race to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. The Spain-Portugal (2018) and Qatar (2022) bids are also being investigated over claims of collusion, which is strictly forbidden under Fifa rules.

The Olympic Movement went through a painful reform process in the wake of the 1998 Salt Lake City bribery scandal – and Rogge believes Fifa must go down the same path.

''I encouraged him [Blatter] to do what he has done and clean out as much as possible,” said Rogge. “We have been through this and the IOC came out as a better and more transparent organisation, and I hope that happens to my friends.

"Will this happen again to the IOC? I hope not. We have the processes to protect us as much as possible, but cheating is embedded in human culture. We are very vigilant, we have strict rules and I believe this protects us as much as possible, but you can never say never.''

Meanwhile, a former Fifa executive committee member believes the December 2 vote to decide who hosts the 2018/2022 tournaments should be postponed.

Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder, the former German FA (DFB) chief, was an ex-co member until 2007 and is still a member of Fifa's players status committee.

He thinks it will be difficult to make a decision until a full investigation has been carried out into the affair.

"The awarding [of the World Cups] should be postponed until the question is cleared up, in a negative or a positive way," Mayer-Vorfelder told Sport Bild magazine. "Four weeks would not make a big difference."

"The executive committee is not a pile of corrupt people. It is just that some people took a wrong turn."

Some Fifa sources insist the vote will go ahead as planned on December 2, although it has been suggested this morning (Thursday) that the 2022 vote could be delayed.
