The English Premier League (EPL) has leapfrogged Germany’s Bundesliga to become the highest-earning European league by shirt sponsorship revenue.
The Premier League has increased shirt sponsorship revenue by 45m euros compared to last year to take its total to 128m euros, according to the 12th edition of the European Jersey Report by global sports marketing consultancy SPORT+MARKT.
The overall market grew across Europe’s top leagues (England, Italy, Spain, France, Germany and the Netherlands) by 18 per cent on last year to 470.7m euros.
“The Premier League is the standard-bearer for jersey sponsorship in Europe and represents the major platform for international companies wishing to invest in football,” said Gareth Moore, UK director of SPORT+MARKT.
“Fifteen clubs have increased their revenue from improved jersey sponsorship deals, and three of the five clubs with the most lucrative deals in Europe come from the Premier League.”
Manchester United and Liverpool’s new deals with AON and Standard Chartered respectively are the clear leaders in Europe, each worth 23.6m euros.
Meanwhile, FxPro chose the Premier League to make its debut in football sponsorship and Tottenham Hotspur secured deals with two shirt sponsors – Autonomy for league games and Investec for cup matches.
Moore continued: “It is plain to see that when a new company chooses to invest significant amounts of money in sport sponsorship, the Premier League is the top destination”.
The French, German and Spanish leagues also recorded increased shirt sponsorship revenues, while the Netherlands’ figure remained similar to the previous year. Only Italy’s Serie A reported a decline in shirt sponsorship income.
