The deputy chairman of Ukraine’s parliament has labelled the country’s plan to bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics “inappropriate”.
Mykota Tomenko reportedly believes that Ukraine's president Viktor Yanukovych wants to bid for the event to keep pace with Russia, which is hosting the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi.
A Ukrainian news agency quoted Tomenko as saying: “It was always a mystery for me where this inappropriate idea of the Winter Olympics came from. Why inappropriate? Because we should not build facilities for the kinds of sports that don’t exist in Ukraine and pay for this from the state budget.
“If this Olympics, God forbid, takes place, it would destroy the whole of Ukrainian sport. To throw money at building sports facilities for sports Ukraine has never had means to throw budget money into nowhere.”
