Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone has launched an astonishing attack on this season’s new teams, branding them “cripples” and “embarrassments” that do nothing for the sport.
Lotus, Virgin and Hispania joined the grid at the start of the 2010 season and continue to struggle at the back of the pack as the F1 season reaches its climax.
And Ecclestone told the Financial Times: “They do nothing for us. They are an embarrassment. We need to get rid of a few of those cripples.
“[Virgin Group chief] Richard [Branson] should put some money in there [Virgin], shouldn't he? He could do what [Red Bull magnate Dietrich Mateschitz] has done and put some money in.”
