Poland 2012 organisers have vowed to learn lessons from this year’s World Cup in South Africa to ensure that the stadiums at the European Championships meet the expectations of visiting supporters.
Marcin Herra, president of PL.2012, told the Global Sports Industry Congress in London this week that he attended the 2010 World Cup as “an ordinary supporter” and felt that the South African authorities did not get everything right for the fans.
The late finish of some stadiums meant that they could not be tested and Herra told delegates that Poland, which is co-hosting Euro 2012 with Ukraine, would not make the same mistake.
“From an operational point of view, South Africa faced a huge challenge and a lot of things didn’t happen,” he said.
“Without testing it is very difficult to be sure that you have a proper level of quality. The forward testing needs to be appropriate.”
Herra added that all four Polish stadiums being used for the tournament were on course to be completed by the third quarter of 2011. This would leave nine months before the event begins.
Poland's host cities are Wroclaw, Warsaw, Poznan and Gdansk.
