The Olympic Museum is to undergo a $50m renovation.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced that the facility will be "completely modernised over the next few years".
The museum, on a hill overlooking Lake Geneva in Lausanne, opened in 1993 and has attracted 3.3 million visitors. It houses permanent and temporary exhibits related to sports and the Olympics.
The IOC said on Tuesday (November 2) that the project involves "considerable work to the building to bring it into line with the latest norms in terms of safety, respect for the environment and working conditions".
The plans must be accepted by Lausanne City Council.
The IOC added that, in the "best-case scenario", work will begin in 2012. The museum will be closed for about 20 months.
