Volkswagen has ruled out the possibility of entering Formula 1 with one of its brands, according to reports in the German media.

Speculation had been mounting that VW was evaluating the possibility of using Porsche as a route into F1, which would leave Audi as the focus of its sportscar programme and VW itself to concentrate on rallying.

Any move into the F1 arena was, however, subject to discussions within the VW board, with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper reporting that, following a board meeting, it has decided not to push ahead with the plans.

Citing unnamed sources, the paper said that both Red Bull and McLaren had shown interest in using engines supplied by Volkswagen but that VW chairman Ferdinand Piech had decided that the group would focus on its current commitments.

That means Audi and Porsche will continue to compete in major sportscar races like the Le Mans 24 Hours while VW is still reported to be interested in making a move into the World Rally Championship.
