New York’s horse racing tracks are back on the list to host the Breeders’ Cup Championships now that a casino at Aqueduct Racetrack is almost complete.
Breeders’ Cup chief executive Greg Avioli told Bloomberg: “One thing that kept New York out of the rotation was a financial concern. Now that they’ve reached an agreement with the state and the casino is going in at Aqueduct, New York is back in the running after 2011.”
The last Breeders’ Cup held in New York was in 2005 at Belmont Park, which also hosted the event in 1990, 1995 and 2001.
The casino at Aqueduct in Queens, operated by Genting New York, will have 4,525 slot machines that are expected to produce at least $30m a year for the state’s race tracks and breeding operations, according to the New York Times.
The two-day Breeders’ Cup Championships is a lucrative event for the host city. This year’s races begin on Friday (November 5) at Churchill Downs in Louisville. The city expects racegoers to spend about $4m, according to the Louisville Convention and Visitors Center.
