Rio 2016 director Jeanine Pires has dismissed fears that hosting the football World Cup and the Summer Olympics within the space of two years will be too demanding.
Brazil will be only the third country in history to host both events within two years of each other – following in the footsteps of West Germany in the early 1970s and the USA in the mid-90s.
Brazil does not yet have the required infrastructure to stage both events, but the country’s economy is one of the fastest growing in the world.
Pires said: "Economic and social stability and growth is very important when you think long-term and about sustainable growth.
"We have a big developing market and whereas in 2003 we had 30 million people who were in poverty, they now have the capacity to be consumers.
"But the infrastructure in Brazil is not at the same stage as the growth and having these events means we have deadlines and things have to be accelerated towards those deadlines.
"But with the World Cup and the Olympics we have the chance to show the world about Brazil and change the stereotypes.
"This is a way to face problems and to have bigger and long-term objectives through the events.
"Hosting both is not a problem because Rio is one of the 12 host cities of the World Cup. The Olympics will therefore be part of the legacy of the World Cup."
