The South Africa World Cup generated a record $3.5bn in revenues.
It had previously been predicted that this summer’s tournament would be the most lucrative in the history of the event – but organising committee chief executive Danny Jordaan confirmed the $3.5bn figure at the end of a two-day Africa International Media Summit in Durban. By way of comparison, Germany 2006 brought in about $2.8bn.
Jordaan said: "We met all demands of the competition – hence the event was the most successful in many years.
"With the support of the entire continent, we proved to the world that we were capable of organising a more complex and complicated event, and it was an African World Cup indeed."
