Former United States president Bill Clinton will lead the country’s World Cup bid team at the Fifa vote in Zurich next month.
Clinton is honorary chairman of the USA bid committee, whose last opportunity to put its case to the Fifa executive committee ahead of the following day's vote comes on the afternoon of December 1.
Opposition for the 2022 tournament comes from Australia, Japan, Qatar and South Korea, and Clinton said: "I'm pleased to stand on behalf of our nation for something as important and meaningful to the American people and citizens throughout the world as the Fifa World Cup.
"I am committed to this effort because I have seen first-hand the powerful unifying force of the World Cup, bringing together people of all ages, backgrounds and beliefs. The bid committee shares that commitment and we look forward to expressing that commitment to the Fifa executive.”
Clinton represented the US earlier this year at the World Cup finals in South Africa – meeting Nelson Mandela among other political and sports leaders – and has worked with the board of directors on a variety of initiatives to promote the bid both in the US and abroad.
Sunil Gulati, president of US Soccer and of the bid committee, added: “President Clinton has been, and continues to be, the perfect ambassador for the United States and our bid.
"His leadership on behalf of our campaign has been extraordinary, and his passion for the game and our opportunity to host the World Cup is every bit as remarkable. We are honoured that he will be with us in Zurich.”
