Chelsea looks East for naming rights sponsor
 10/11/2010

Chelsea’s first stadium naming rights partner could come from Asia, the club’s head of marketing has revealed.

Ben Wells said that Asia’s surging economy has increased the possibility of a sponsor coming from the East.

The club has been looking to sell the naming rights to Stamford Bridge for some time and Wells told Bloomberg: “We are in Asia, absolutely.

“There are a lot of brands in these markets who eventually are going to outstrip their domestic demand and look to launch internationally. What better platform than the global footprint the Premier League provides?”

Chelsea’s shirt sponsor is South Korean electronics giant Samsung, while the club sponsors the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), which is responsible for football in 46 countries.

“The Asian market is colossal,” Wells continued. “If you look at the AFC, they represent two-thirds of the world’s population.”

On the stadium naming rights, he added: “The right partner will come along at the right time.”

It was reported this week that Chelsea is in talks to leave Stamford Bridge and build a 60,000-seat stadium about half a mile away on the site of the Earls Court exhibition centre.

However, the venue would not be ready until 2015 and the club denied on Tuesday (November 9) that it was looking for a new ground.

A spokesman said: "We'll always look at proposals presented to us, but we have no plans to move stadium at this time."
