The Premier of Victoria John Brumby has defended the use of taxpayers' money to pay part of Tiger Woods' Australian Masters appearance fee.
Woods is being paid $3m to appear in the tournament – and part of that fee is coming straight out of taxpayers' pockets.
Brumby, however, has defended the expenditure, claiming that Woods' appearance was still a massive coup for the state, despite the former world No1's recent troubles on and off the course.
"The great thing about sport is that you can make and re-make the heroes," said Brumby.
"So, he was on top of the world last year, he has been down and the question is can he come up again and win this event?
"I think the eyes of the world will be on him and he might come out and just smash 'em."
