Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa has appointed Central Bank governor Nivard Cabraala to head Hambantota's bid committee for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
The committee also includes the country’s speaker Chamal Rajapaksa and former deputy minister of justice Dilan Perera.
Under Cabraala, a qualified accountant, Sri Lanka has undergone substantial economic growth with gross domestic product (GDP) doubling, a fall in unemployment, and a reduction in poverty.
Building infrastructure facilities such as stadiums and the Games Village at Hambantota will be among the tasks entrusted to the new committee as it competes against its only rival, the Gold Coast in Australia.
