Brands are missing out on a huge opportunity to run promotions around the London 2012 Olympics, a leading marketer has warned.
Vice-chairman of the Institute of Promotional Marketing Becky Munday believes there is a fear over the legal implications of non-official sponsors aligning themselves with the event.
But she told website UTalkMarketing: “There are opportunities for brands to run Olympic-focused promotions beyond being official sponsors.
“It’s all down to looking at the creative opportunity and as a creative industry this is a challenge we should all embrace, rather than turn away from.
“Some focus groups are underway, but not enough brands are pre-planning for the Olympics.
“There is a real opportunity for brands to cash in on the event but they need to start thinking about it now.”
