Ticket sales for the upcoming Ashes series are proving to be unexpectedly low with tens of thousands of seats yet to be sold for the Boxing Day Test at the MCG.

Along with a slump in television ratings, the poor uptake could cost Cricket Australia $20m (£12.3m) this financial year.

Tickets for the series, which begins at the Gabba in Brisbane on November 25, have been on sale for four months. As well as for the fourth Test in Melbourne, there are also tickets available for the opening day of the final Test in Sydney, which begins on January 2.

During the 2006/07 series, 16 of the scheduled 25 match days of Ashes cricket sold out in less than a week, including the first four days of the Sydney Test and the first three days of the Melbourne Test.
