The Football League has complained to BBC radio sport on behalf of its new title sponsor npower, which is thought to be upset that Aviva, the backer of Premiership rugby, is receiving far more name-checks on a daily basis.
The Daily Mail claims that npower, which has been monitoring its 5 Live mentions, has asked for parity with Aviva, which is also in the first season of its rugby sponsorship.
Colin Patterson, editor of BBC radio sports news, said in an email to staff: “We have guidelines on the number of times we mention sponsors' names. But a recent check has thrown up huge anomalies – and understandably this has annoyed certain sponsors who feel it's unfair. Certain companies are monitoring this closely, and we need to be fair.”
Patterson outlines that for each major sports event, there should be a limit of three mentions per day in the morning, lunchtime and evening news reports.
He added: “This does not mean I want us to start mentioning sponsors more of the time, but rather that we balance it all up.”
