Asian Games reports record sponsorship revenues
 29/11/2010

The 16th Asian Games raised a record $454m in sponsorship, according to reports.

Chinese news agency Xinhua said the figure for the Guangzhou event – which finished over the weekend – was five times greater than in Doha in 2006.

“This was the best ever Asian Games,” Olympic Council of Asia president Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah told more than 30,000 athletes, officials, volunteers and fans at the closing ceremony.

Games marketing executives signed up 52 companies, with more than a dozen major sponsors, reported Xinhua.

Key sponsor Guangzhou Automotive Group, which makes Hyundai cars, is thought to have contributed up to $90m, while Samsung Electronics and local sportswear giant 361 Degrees put in about one third of that sum.

Among the other main sponsors were China Mobile, China Southern Airlines, TV maker TCL, internet portal Netease, and the Taiwan Beer Group.
