Impasse in Dodgers ownership dispute
 03/12/2010

Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt and his ex-wife Jamie have reached an impasse in their dispute over control of the Major League Baseball club, a mediator in the case said this week.

The failure of the newly divorced couple to reach a settlement on ownership of the team sets the stage for the issue to be decided by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Scott Gordon.

Specifically, the judge will rule on the validity of several versions of the couple's post-nuptial agreement, which Frank McCourt asserts gives him sole ownership of the Dodgers, reports Reuters.

Jamie McCourt has maintained the team was meant to be community property of the couple.

The Dodgers is considered one of the premier clubs in Major League Baseball and was valued by Forbes magazine in 2009 at $722m.

The mediator assigned to the case, Superior Court Judge Peter Lichtman, presented the two sides with a proposed settlement of the dispute two weeks ago, and gave the couple until the end of the month to accept or reject it. The terms of the proposal were kept confidential.

Frank McCourt's lawyer, Marc Seltzer, said in a statement that his client accepted the mediator's offer, adding: "We can only conclude that Jamie rejected Judge Lichtman's settlement proposal and is allowing this matter to drag on further."

The McCourts' divorce was finalised on October 26. The couple, who were married for over 30 years, bought the Los Angeles baseball team in 2004.
