The Rugby Football Union (RFU) has appointed Ian Metcalfe as chairman of the Professional Game Board (PGB).
An RFU board director and former England 'B' international, Metcalfe replaces Martyn Thomas with immediate effect.
The PGB was formed out of the eight-year agreement between the RFU and Premiership Rugby in 2008, with a remit to manage issues ranging from season structure to player welfare. The RFU nominates the chairman on a two-year tenure.
"Ian is an outstanding choice as the new chairman of the PGB," Thomas said.
"He has a deep knowledge of high-performance rugby and has trust and credibility with the professional clubs and, through his involvement with the RPA [Rugby Players' Association], is highly respected there also. I am sure he will lead the PGB with distinction and vision."
