Manchester has been awarded the European Taekwondo Championships, which will take place just weeks before the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

The decision was made at a European Taekwondo Union executive committee meeting in Athens, at which Sport Taekwondo UK and the British Taekwondo Control Board presented their bid to the federation.

Jeremy Beard, chairman of Sport Taekwondo UK, said: “This is fantastic news for Taekwondo fans across the UK and provides us with a real chance to showcase the sport at a time when excitement will be growing ahead of the Olympics.

“It also recognises Sport Taekwondo UK’s ability to stage world-class events and indeed Manchester’s reputation as a global sporting capital. Interest in the European Championships will be significant and we are looking forward to working with partners to deliver what will be a truly memorable event.”
